3 Keeping in mind the overarching goal… Libraries strive to help parents and caregivers internalize and apply best practices from workshops Important to keep in mind that the “end goal” is to improve early literacy skills for children

4 Library Research in Early Literacy Experimental research conducted from 2005-2007 with results for children and adults: Carroll County, Maryland Subsequent research project: Pierce County, Washington Current research projects: Los Angeles, Columbus Ohio, Washington State Future project: ECRR

6 The power of teaching parents & caregivers  An initial workshop with a homework assignment to do activities at home  A take home kit of materials and resources  Ongoing support in the form of an occasional phone call or e-mail message  A follow-up workshop with time to share and discuss children’s growth

7 The power of teaching parents & caregivers  A learning philosophy that emphasizes that we are each responsible for our own learning and use a “see it, do it, teach it” approach  Hands-on activities in the workshop  Transfer of learning by encouraging activities between the workshops and beyond the training program
