Cinder cones Cinder cones are the most common type of volcano. They are built from pieces of congealed lava launched from a single vent. As the gas-charged lava is blown violently into the air, it breaks into small fragments that solidify and fall as cinders around the vent to form a circular cone.

Composite volcanoes They are typically very steep, symmetrical cones and usually make the the biggest volcanoes. They may rise as much as 8,000 feet above their bases.

Shield volcanoes Shield volcanoes are made of mostly of fluid lava flowers. Shield volcanoes usually erupt from vents along the sides. Shield volcanoes are what makes up the Hawaiian islands.
