11 Act I Scene 3 After the first prophecy comes true. MACBETH. [Aside.] Two truths are told, As happy prologues to the swelling act Of the imperial theme -I thank you, gentlemen. [Aside.] This supernatural soliciting Cannot be ill, cannot be good. If ill, Why hath it given me earnest of success, Commencing in a truth? I am Thane of Cawdor. If good, why do I yield to that suggestion Whose horrid image doth unfix my hair And make my seated heart knock at my ribs, Against the use of nature? Present fears Are less than horrible imaginings: My thought, whose murder yet is but fantastical, Shakes so my single state of man that function Is smother'd in surmise, and nothing is But what is not What is Macbeth’s mood after hearing the news? Why is [Aside] used in the text? Information to fill in the gaps with the students: After the sisters disappear, two noblemen bring Macbeth news that the Thane of Cawdor proved to be a traitor and will be put to death. They report that, to honor Macbeth for his great achievements in battle, King Duncan has given the title to him – Macbeth is now the Thane of Cawdor just as the weird sisters suggested. The Macbeth’s mood is happy, excited, but cautious. He is pessimistic. He likes that he has been given these titles but he wonders at what cost? [Aside] is used because Macbeth is speaking to himself, not to another character. Macbeth is portrayed as a hero at the beginning so we can clearly see how he quickly deteriorates.

12 Act I scene 5 How does Lady Macbeth feel about Macbeth?
After Lady Macbeth reads the letter from Macbeth. LADY MACBETH Glamis thou art, and Cawdor; and shalt be What thou art promis'd; yet do I fear thy nature; It is too full o' the milk of human kindness To catch the nearest way: thou wouldst be great; Art not without ambition; but without The illness should attend it. What thou wouldst highly, That wouldst thou holily; wouldst not play false, And yet wouldst wrongly win: thou'dst have, great Glamis, That which cries, "Thus thou must do, if thou have it: And that which rather thou dost fear to do Than wishest should be undone." Hie thee hither, That I may pour my spirits in thine ear; And chastise with the valor of my tongue All that impedes thee from the golden round, Which fate and metaphysical aid doth seem To have thee crown'd withal. How does Lady Macbeth feel about Macbeth? What do her words reveal about herself? We first see Lady Macbeth in Act I scene 5, and she is reading a letter from Macbeth. In the letter, Macbeth is describing his encounter with the witches and his new title. Lady Macbeth reveals that she is a strong character. She describes Macbeth as being weak and she must push him to achieve. It is too full o' the milk of human kindness To catch the nearest way: thou wouldst be great; Art not without ambition; but without The illness should attend it.- Lady Macbeth is saying that Macbeth has ambition but lacks the motivation. He acts like a woman “It is too full o' the milk of human kindness”

14 What major idea or theme can we see in this speech?
Act I scene 5 LADY MACBETH. O, never Shall sun that morrow see! Your face, my thane, is as a book where men May read strange matters:—to beguile the time, Look like the time; bear welcome in your eye, Your hand, your tongue: look like the innocent flower, But be the serpent under't. He that's coming Must be provided for: and you shall put This night's great business into my despatch; Which shall to all our nights and days to come Give solely sovereign sway and masterdom. What major idea or theme can we see in this speech? “Your hand, your tongue, look like the innocent flower, but be the serpent under’t”- Lady Macbeth is describing being innocent when in reality they plan on murdering King Duncan. Other examples are Macbeth throughout the play- having Banquo killed, killing the watchmen outside of King Duncan’s room and saying they were the ones that killed King Duncan.

15 Act I Scene 7 How is Lady Macbeth using manipulation?
MACBETH Prithee, peace: I dare do all that may become a man; Who dares do more is none. LADY MACBETH What beast was't, then, That made you break this enterprise to me? When you durst do it, then you were a man; And, to be more than what you were, you would Be so much more the man. Nor time nor place Did then adhere, and yet you would make both: They have made themselves, and that their fitness now Does unmake you. I have given suck, and know How tender 'tis to love the babe that milks me: I would, while it was smiling in my face, Have pluck'd my nipple from his boneless gums, And dash'd the brains out, had I so sworn as you Have done to this. If we should fail? LADY MACBETH We fail! But screw your courage to the sticking-place, And we'll not fail. When Duncan is asleep-- Whereto the rather shall his day's hard journey Soundly invite him--his two chamberlains Will I with wine and wassail so convince That memory, the warder of the brain, Shall be a fume, and the receipt of reason A limbeck only: when in swinish sleep Their drenched natures lie as in a death, What cannot you and I perform upon The unguarded Duncan? what not put upon His spongy officers, who shall bear the guilt Of our great quell? Divide the class in half – One half will take the stance that Macbeth has the power and is responsible for Duncan’s death, the other half will take the stance that Lady Macbeth has the power and is responsible for Duncan’s death.
