Kinds of Sentences Review

Sentence Structure A simple sentence contains one independent clause and no subordinate clauses. A compound sentence contains two or more independent clauses and no subordinate clauses. A complex sentence contains one independent clause and at least one subordinate clause. A compound-complex sentence contains two or more independent clauses and at least one subordinate clause.

Identify each sentence as (S) simple, (CD) compound, or (CX) complex.
1. The leaves of the plant were so large that I didn’t notice the geckos. 2. Birds flew, children played, and the sun shone. 3. My sister has a paper route, and I help her deliver papers every morning. 4. Later that evening, Lucy and I stood at the wishing well and made a wish. 5.Rollers crush raw latex into sheets of rubber, which are then dried.

6. Mangroves provide nectar for honeybees.
7. Bright, colored neon lights blinked on and off as we drove through town. 8. A hallow gourd makes a great bird feeder; my feeder attracted lots of birds. 9. A ceiling fan rotated slowly above us. 10. On shelves sat a dozen of Vernon’s model cars; each one was the result of many hours of work.
