Thumbs UP for the Thumb Rule! The Thumb Rule is an English strategy that can work alone or in conjunction with Look Left and STOP/GO. In other words, it deserves a thumbs up! The THUMB RULE helps you to identify when commas or dashes are needed to identify non-essential clauses. Non-essential clauses are those “interrupters” that often appear between the subject and verb of a sentence.
5
Thumb Rule – How does it work? Place your thumb over the information that you think is non-essential and look at the parts of the sentence that are not covered by your thumb. Answer the following two questions: 1. Can I take out the information? 2. Should I take out the information? If the answer is YES, then you surround the “stuff” under your thumb with either commas or dashes.
6
For Example: My sister, the one who constantly borrows my shoes, looks quite a bit like me. My other sister, however, has completely different taste and looks nothing like me.
7
Homework Finish the reverse side of this handout. Review all of the ACT English Rules. Do some practice questions online. “What are you prepared to do?”
