Add Notes Hans Holbein : Self-Portrait, 1542 Source: Wikimedia Commons Holbein was born in Augsburg in Germany in c.1497. He was trained by his father, Hans Holbein the Elder. As a young man he mainly produced religious images but after the Reformation he began to paint portraits and soon established a reputation as one of the greatest portrait artists. Holbein travelled to England in 1526 to paint Henry’s minister Thomas More. In 1532 painted Anne Boleyn and the King’s minister Thomas Cromwell. By 1535 he was King Henry’s official painter. He painted portraits of the king’s family. He died of the plague in London in 1543. Main Menu
