The term, Illumination comes from the term Illuminate, or to fill with light. Illuminated Letters From a very early thirteenth-Century manuscript of Peter Lombard's. Peter Lombard as the bearded scholar with quill and knife.

What are illuminated letters? Illuminated letters are letters used to decorate the pages of hand written manuscripts The term, Illumination comes from the term Illuminate, or to fill with light Gold leaf was used to create the letters and images, which reflect light and appear to glow.

Illuminated letters On your portfolio an illuminated letter will be used for the first letter of your first and last name. Design your own illuminated letter Emphasis is on detail, creativity and colour The Marriage; the Kiss of the Bride (initial P); 1350

Your Portfolio In this project you will create an art folder that will display your first and last name in an illuminated style. The name or design will fill the space approximately 75%. The project will be completed in pencil crayon. Not coloured Markers!

Color or Value: Try to use one of the following colour schemes: Warm: yellow, oranges and reds Cool: green, blue and violet Neutral: browns, grays, blacks and whites Complementary colour scheme: Red and green Blue and orange Yellow and violet

Make a Tint To make a lighter value or tint, first color firmly with a colour where you want a pure colour. Then lighten the colour by using a lighter pressure with the pencil crayon

Make a Shade To make a darker value or shade, first color lightly with black. Then color over the black with a color of your choice. You can also use blue or dark brown to darken colours
