Thomas Edison For the invention of the light bulb, Thomas Edison had 30 assistants, including well-trained scientists, often working around the clock in a corporate-funded state-of-the-art laboratory! It did not happen suddenly. The light bulb has become the symbol for that single moment when the brilliant solution strikes, but there was no single moment of invention. In fact, the light bulb was not one invention, but a whole network of time-consuming inventions, each requiring one or more chemists, mathematicians, physicist, engineers and glassblowers. 7. Mindsets Fixed Mindset- In a fixed mindset, people believe their basic qualities, like their intelligence or talent, are simply fixed traits. They spend their time documenting their intelligence or talent instead of developing them. They also believe that talent alone creates success—without effort. Growth Mindset- In a growth mindset, people believe that their most basic abilities can be developed through dedication and hard work—brains and talent are just the starting point. This view creates a love of learning and a resilience that is essential for great accomplishment.

8. Mindset Scenario Imagine you have decided to learn a new language and you’ve signed up for a class. A few classes into the school year, the teacher calls you to the front of the class and starts throwing questions at you in the new language. Put yourself in a fixed mindset. You feel everyone’s eyes on you. The teacher is staring at you, deciding if you are smart or not. If you answer the questions wrong she might think you are a bad student and not like you for the rest of the year. Put yourself in a growth mindset. You are new to this language. That’s why you are here- to learn. The teacher is a resource to help you. You see some of your classmates smiling at you, encouraging you.

9. Writing Response Write a response to the following vignette from both a fixed and a growth mindset. One day you go to a class that is really important to you and that you really like a lot. The teacher returns a big test and you got a C+. You are very disappointed. One your way home that night, you get in a car accident. You call your best friend to get some support but he/she brushes you off.
