CSC/FAR 020, Computer Graphics, April 6, 2010 Dr. Dale E. Parson http://faculty.kutztown.edu/parson Outline for week 11 Illustrator Type, Pathfinder, Trace Also assignment #7, due 4/15/2010.
2
Type Tools Horizontal and Vertical Type are similar to Photoshop. Point Type is stand-alone text. Paragraph Type comes with paragraph formatting. You can convert Photoshop Type to Shapes and import to Illustrator Area Type fills a closed polygon. Path Type follows a Path.
3
Area Type Area Type Tool, select a convex polygon. Enter the text inside the polygon. Center paragraph format within the shape. Draw a curvy line with the Pencil Tool. Use Path Type Tool to select that path. Add text. Scale the shape later then adjust font size to fit. Select / vertical bars to reposition. Use Type -> Type on a Path.
4
Type Options Try Type menu Options, Glyphs samples. Window -> Type Character, Paragraph show options. Character rotation. Direct Selection selects a shape without type. Import Type from a word processing document using File -> Place. Type -> Create Outlines converts each letter to a Shape. This is no longer editable Type.
5
Appearance, Pathfinder Panel Appearance Panel fx can warp type (or shapes) similar to PhotoShop. FX can be applied to any Shape, Group or Layer. Illustrator FX and PhotoShop FX are available. Learn a few at a time as you go along. Pathfinder Panel merges, manages paths.
6
Trace File -> New, 11” wide x 8.5 “ high. File -> Place JPEG file DSC_0007.jpg, scale. Live Trace -> Tracing Options on Control Panel. Increasing colors (bits) and decreasing pixels (averaging) increases sharpness. Appearance Panel sets Opacity and Blending Mode. Control Panel -> Expand converts to paths.

Assignment 7: FirstLastDual.zip Assignment 7 is centered around the notion of interleaving the raster and vector graphics “worlds.” Escher’s Double Planetoid is part of the inspiration http://www.worldofescher.com/gallery/A12L. html http://www.worldofescher.com/gallery/A12L. html Escher’s image interleaves the “natural” and “synthetic” worlds without interaction.

Assignment 7 Compositional Ideas Other dichotomies include analog (continuous) versus digital (discrete) visual media, or raster versus vector graphics strengths / weaknesses. You don’t need to “Do Escher.” You do need to use both Illustrator and PhotoShop to construct a final image. The theme and the visual elements are yours to decide. See exporttheneditfromillus.jpg for my initial study. I will be doing a different piece using another of my wife’s photos.
9
Assignment 7 Requirements Create one final composite image. Make sure to include any original photos. They must be photographs that you have taken. One option is to use no photos. You can create these images entirely using Illustrator and PhotoShop if you prefer. You must use both tools and you must log your editing steps and your decisions for which tool to use for each set of steps.
10
Assignment 7 Duality Requirements There should be two different “looks” to the final image, and these looks must be interleaved in some manner throughout the image. My exporttheneditfromillus.jpg study captured silhouettes in PhotoShop from a still shot, exported tolerance-rounded paths to Illustrator, added background gradients in Illustrator, exported back to PhotoShop for highlights / shadow adjustment and pixel repair to some of the trees. The two “looks” are the digitally aliased silhouettes versus the gradient folded sky background.
11
Requirement Checklist 1 You may use Type interleaved with Geometric Shapes, Drawings, or Images if you like. You can create a poster, an advertisement, or an aesthetic image. The compositional goal is to have two different looks that are spatially interleaved with each other. Use both Illustrator and PhotoShop to get two different looks and possibly to do the interleaving.
12
Requirement Checklist 2 Leave layers intact where possible. Turn off layer visibility as needed to present the final image you want to display. Describe main steps in your log file in bullet form. Save your final work with as a PSD or AI file. Log the files’ names and your name. This is due April 15 at 11:59 PM. Call it FirstLastDual.zip using your First and Last names.
