Fable 1. Fictional Story about human faults Criticizes the weaknesses of humans 2. Personification Animals have human characteristics (talk/reasoning) 3. Moral/Lesson (theme) Teaches a lesson

Satire 1. Fictional story about a serious matter/issue Criticizes the government & world-wide issues 2. Wit Intellectual humor 3. Irony Verbal – sarcasm/lies (strong opinions) Situational – situations are not expected

Allegory 1. Fictional story with a deeper meaning Can be read on two levels The story on the surface (read it as it is) The underlying story (the real-life story it represents) 2. Extended Metaphor Fictional comparison to real-life, well-known events in history 3. Symbolism Characters, events, and ideas symbolize real-life people, events, and ideas
