Introduction to the course The Law 12 course has been developed for high school students who have an interest in Canadian law and wish to understand how it functions within our society. While providing understanding as to how law functions in Canada, this course will develop the student’s critical thinking, organizational, and research skills

Course Topics based on Learning Expectations: 1.Introduction to Law –What is Law and its purpose within a society –The History and origins of Canadian Law –The level of governments in Canada and their responsibilities.

Course Topics based on Learning Expectations: 2.International Law –Structure and organisation –How it affects Canada 3.Charter of Rights and Freedom & Human Rights –Understanding the Charter of Rights and Freedoms –How does the Charter reflect Canadian society

Course Topics based on Learning Expectations: 4.Civil Law –Civil Procedures –Negligence and Unintentional Torts –Intentional Torts –Marriage and Divorce –Child Custody and Spousal Support –Division of Property upon Death (wills) 5.Contract and Business Law –Personal Research Project

Attendance and Assessment Policy Tests will be announced a week in advance. Please check calendar on teacher’s website. Should a student be absent on the day of a test, test will be written on the day of his/her return unless otherwise pre- arranged with teacher.

Attendance and Assessment Policy Assignments and projects are handed in at the beginning of class on the due date, unless otherwise discussed or indicated on website. Should student be absent on that date, assignment is due upon her/his return unless otherwise pre-arranged with teacher. Throughout the most of the semester, students will be working on a Career Portfolio, a reflection journal and an end of the year project and presentation on Criminal Law

Attendance and Assessment Policy Please note: Many of the assignments will be directly linked to our school’s Planning for Improvement objectives and will include activities with multi-genre writing and the usage of fractions.
