1 Warm-Up What type of pressure systems are tornadoes and hurricanes associated with? Name the intensity ranking system for Tornados and hurricanes. Which layer of the atmosphere does weather occur in? What is the name of the type of scientist who studies the weather? “Sukario Kids”

2 8.6 – Weather Forecast SWBAT predict the weather using available weather maps & data (including surface, upper atmospheric winds, satellite imagery). Daily Question: What is the wind speed and atmospheric pressure for this weather station? Warm-Up Objective / DQ Finish Twister Weather Proverbs Reading a Weather Station Making a Weather Station Analyzing Weather

3 UNIT 8 TEST – WEDNESDAY! Announcements Final Exam Schedule:
First Block: June 1 Second Block: June 2 Third Block: June 3 Fourth Block: June 4

4 Finish Twister As we finish watching the movie, finish completing your viewing guide

5 This is what you will be able to tackle at the end of unit: What can you point out & name from this map so far??

6 1=light, 2=moderate, 3=heavy
Cloud Cover Temperature 1=light, 2=moderate, 3=heavy Air Pressure Precipitation Wind Speed Dew Point Temperature Wind Direction

7 Weather Station Models
In the United States, surface temperature is expressed in degrees Fahrenheit. In the station model plot, temperature is plotted where the number 10 is on a clock. The dew point temperature is plotted below (at about 8 o'clock) and in the same units as temperature.

8 What Type Of Precipitation Is Shown On This Forecast Map?
1=light, 2=moderate, 3=heavy Precipitation= _____

9 1=light, 2=moderate, 3=heavy
How would you illustrate a heavy drizzle? Moderate Snow? 1=light, 2=moderate, 3=heavy

10 What Is The Cloud Cover For This Forecast Map?

11 HUMIDITY Dew Point is the temperature at which water vapor becomes saturated and liquid water is produced. Always equal to or less than the temperature. Example: 65oF outside with a dew point of 64o means it’s about to produce some form of moisture/precipitation.

12 Forecasting Map: Dew Point

13 Wind Speed “Feathers” off the main line represent wind speed
Half Feather = 5 mph Full Feather = 10 mph Example: What is the wind speed in Utica, New York? 10 knots 5 knots

14 What Is The Wind Speed And Wind Direction?

15 Atmospheric Pressure 138 is NOT the literal atmospheric pressure!!
Greater than 500 add a 9 Less than 500 add a 10 Add a decimal before the last number

16 1=light, 2=moderate, 3=heavy
Cloud Cover Temperature 1=light, 2=moderate, 3=heavy Air Pressure Precipitation Wind Speed Dew Point Temperature Wind Direction

17 Let’s Try Some Together

18 Baton Rouge, LA In Baton Rouge, there was 75% cloud coverage. The temperature was 70 degrees, with wind blowing from the southeast (135o) at 35 knots. The dew point is 69o with an atmospheric pressure of mb. There was a heavy thunderstorm that developed. Cloud cover: Wind direction: Wind speed: Temperature: Humidity: Atmospheric Pressure: Previous Weather: O

19 What weather is this location experiencing?
Cloud cover: _____________ Wind direction: ___________ Wind speed: ______________ Temperature: _____________ Humidity: _______________ Atmospheric Pressure: _____ Previous Weather: _________

20 Exit Ticket Create a weather station model for the following information: Temperature: 77o Dew point: 77 Weather: heavy rain Atmospheric Pressure: mb Wind: 35o from the SW Cloud Coverage: mostly cloudy
