3 Causes of War Tensions had been building in Europe for years! Militarism European Nations competed with each other to build the largest military - Great Britain & Germany wanted largest Navy - Russia, France, & Germany competed for the largest Army “arms race” driven by strong feelings of pride (nationalism) Alliances For protection (from the large militaries), European countries formed defensive partnerships and agreed to come others aid of attacked - CENTRAL POWERS = Austria-Hungary + Germany + Ottoman Empire - ALLIED POWERS = Great Britain + France + Russia

4 Nationalism Extreme pride in one’s culture and nation – - puts national interest ahead of global cooperation leads to fierce competition and antagonism in EuropeBALKAN TURMOIL (throw off imperialist rule) - Ethnic groups who did not have their own country wanted independence – promote their culture and interests above those of other countries. (Serbia, Bosnia, Croats, Yugoslavia) - Imperialism was against the beliefs of nationalists! Imperialism Countries increased their power and wealth by controlling others. - Industrialized countries acquire new (non-industrialized ) countries to supply them with raw materials. - Quarrels broke out over who should control those colonies /interested in the same area - Smaller countries did not always want to be controlled by others

7 Stop & Think Why is this conflict called a world war? Why might it be difficult to avoid (stay neutral) this kind of war?
