Reflection
4
Promotes self-awareness Focuses on how students learn, not just what they learn Helps students recognize what they do and do not know Embraces moments of confusion as part of the learning process
5
Reflection Key for developing metacognition Empowers students to learn how to learn Creates independent learners Critical for developing transfer and life-long learning skills
6
Activity Please use the worksheet to reflect upon a moment when you learned a new idea or skill, perhaps an “a-ha” moment. How did you know you had learned something?
7
Incorporating Reflection
8
Ways we know we know We can repeat the skill We can write about an idea We can teach someone else the skill or idea We see new connections
9
Incorporating reflection Muddiest moment One minute paper Pre- and post- assessments Microjournaling Map the outcome Explain your process
10
Reflection activities Can be short Can serve double-duty as a learning assessment Can be simple
11
Goals Help students track their learning Discover strengths and weaknesses Show progress Discover room for improvement
12
Activity Using the worksheet, create a reflection activity for a one-shot session you already teach. If you do not currently teach, imagine you are asking students to learn about differentiating primary and secondary sources. Develop a reflection activity.
13
Assessment
