1) What did people believe about disease and germs before Pasteur? A specific phrase is needed, and you need to explain it. [2] “SPONTANEOUS GENERATION” = People believed that germs were the result of disease, not the cause of it!

2) What was Pasteur’s discovery called, and when did he make it? [2] GERM THEORY 1861 Pasteur had proved that germs were the cause of disease!!!

3) Why was Pasteur studying germs? The brewing industry wanted him to explain why their beer was going bad…

4) Briefly explain how he proved that germs are everywhere. Pasteur sterilised water by boiling it, put some into a sterile flask, and left some exposed to the air – this was soon full of germs – he had proved that germs are all around us!
