Distance Vs. Displacement Vs. Position Biniyam Melesse, Ousman Ba & Alba Reyes

Distance In physics the definition of distance is how far you travel. Distance is also a vector because you can direct which way you travel (ex N,E,W,S.). Example if Ousman walks 300 meters from his house to his friend bob’s house his total distance is 300 meters In physics the definition of distance is how far you travel. Distance is also a vector because you can direct which way you travel (ex N,E,W,S.). Example if Ousman walks 300 meters from his house to his friend bob’s house his total distance is 300 meters

displacement Is the difference in position from your initial position and final position. Displacement tells you far you are in the x an y direction. For example if I were to walk 10m east and 10m north that makes my displacement 10mx+10my Is the difference in position from your initial position and final position. Displacement tells you far you are in the x an y direction. For example if I were to walk 10m east and 10m north that makes my displacement 10mx+10my

position Position is the location of an object in with respect to the origin. Example if I were to walk \ 10 meters in the x direction 10 meters in the y and then 10 meters in the –x direction then the position would be 10y

A quarterback runs a play to the running back from the 20 yard line, the running back runs the ball 20 yards in the x until the linebacker comes at him, which puts him in a position that no options but to cut up for 10 yards in the y. And then gets stopped right there by the corner. 8 Distance The distance the running back traveled was 30 yards he ran forward 20 and went up 10 running a total distance of 30 yards The distance the running back traveled was 30 yards he ran forward 20 and went up 10 running a total distance of 30 yards

Displacement The running backs displacement is how far he got from his initial position at the 20 yard line. The running back ran 20yards in the x and 10 yards in the y. Which makes his total displacement about 20x+10y

position Since he traveled 20in the x and 10 in the y his total position is 20x and 10y or 10y and 20x Since he traveled 20in the x and 10 in the y his total position is 20x and 10y or 10y and 20x

total distance of 30 yards total distance of 30 yards total displacement about 20x+10y total displacement about 20x+10y total position is 20x and 10y or 10y and 20x total position is 20x and 10y or 10y and 20x

Heres another one a quarter back gets the ball at the 20 yard line he decides to go for a deep pass and throws it for 50 yards. The ball is intercepted and ran back for a touch down Heres another one a quarter back gets the ball at the 20 yard line he decides to go for a deep pass and throws it for 50 yards. The ball is intercepted and ran back for a touch down

Distance The distance that the ball traveled was 50 yards in the x and another 70 in the -x all the way to a touchdown so a total of 120 yards traveled 50 in the x and 70 in the -x

displacement The displacement of the ball is 50 yards in the X and another 70 in the negative –x The displacement of the ball is 50 yards in the X and another 70 in the negative –x 50x+(-70x)=-20x 50x+(-70x)=-20x

Position The position of the ball is 50 yards in the x and another 70 in –x so if you add them up the position would be -20x

Distance Distance 120 yards 120 yards Displacement Displacement 50x+(-70x)=-20x 50x+(-70x)=-20x Position Position -20x -20x
