Results of the questionnaire about student-centred teaching. 3 rd General High School of Trikala “Odysseas Elytis” 10/01/2014
2
The questionnaire was distributed amongst the teachers who were present at our school on Thursday 9 th and Friday 10 th of January 2014. 23 teachers returned the completed questionnaires. (One had only completed the first six – he/she probably didn’t realise there were more on the other side of the page!) Not all the teachers who were given questionnaires completed them.
3
The teacher must teach to the test since exam results affect students’ future choices.
4
The teacher must encourage collaboration to help facilitate learning.
5
The teacher must correct students’ errors at all times.
6
The teacher must remain in full control of the class at all times.
7
The teacher must avoid deviating from the syllabus, the lesson plan, or the textbook.
8
Students need to be kept active and interested by the teacher.
9
Students usually do not know what’s good for them.
10
Students achieve best in a competitive atmosphere.
11
The teacher must raise students’ awareness of different approaches and styles of learning.
12
Spontaneous interaction helps students to learn to communicate.
13
Learner autonomy is promoted through regular opportunities for learners to complete tasks alone.
14
Involving learners in decisions about what to learn promotes learner autonomy.
15
Conclusion Although a small minority of the teaching staff believes that we should keep total control over the students and stick rigidly to the syllabus, in general the teachers at our school are open to the idea of student autonomy and believe that students should be encouraged to follow their interests and explore their potential in ways that suit them. It is the duty of teachers, however, to always be there to support, monitor and guide them.
