4. l l Unemployment Nearly one-half of the population of the United States belongs to the civilian labor force, and at any given time millions of these people are without jobs. Currently, the US unemployment rate is 9.6 % October 2010. (November 2009 it was 10.2%) The unemployment rate shows the percentage of unemployed people divided by the total number of people in the civilian labor force.
