These include: mining, forestry, farming, grazing, hunting and gathering, fishing, and quarrying. In the UK in 1,800 most people would have been employed in the primary sector. Activities associated with the secondary sector include metal working, engineering industry and construction. Businesses in the secondary sector consist of the primary sector but then add more value to it such as petrol. The number of people employed in the secondary sector is falling. This is because fewer people are needed to work in factories as robots are taking over jobs. In the uk, 37% of the population works in the secondary sector.

10 The tertiary sector of the economy is the service industry. This sector provides services to the general population and to businesses. Activities associated with this sector include retail and wholesale sales, transportation and distribution, entertainment (movies, television, radio, music, theatre, etc.), restaurants, insurance, banking, healthcare, and law. McDonalds, hsbc, busses, subway and airports are all part of this sector as they provide services. The tertiary sector is the main growth area.
