1 Family History Sunday School Class Spokane 22 nd Ward

2 Reasons to do Family History To do our part to fulfill mission of the Church (Redeeming the Dead) To create a welding link of our ancestors through temple sealings To better know and love our ancestors To better know ourselves To be perfected

3 What Do I Need To Get Organized? A desk or a table and chair A box or a filing cabinet and manila folders Pencils or pens Paper, including pedigree charts and family group records A 3-ring binder for your charts and records If possible, a computer and family history software

4 How Do I Get Started? Set aside a space to work where you have room to spread out your papers and books –Your space can be simple (like a box you pull out so you can work on your kitchen table, or a card table in your bedroom. –If you have a computer, you should have easy access to it

5 Getting Started (Continued) Set aside a regular time to do family history –You may be able to find a whole day or a half a day, but you may have to settle for a few hours on Sunday or on some other day of the week.

6 Getting Started (Continued) Get a box or filing cabinet and some manila folders for your family records –Start by labeling a folder with the name of your mother and father For example: James and Joyce Graham Put their birth and death dates under their names Include important locations associated with this family on the folder Then make a folder for each set of grandparents and for all four sets of great-grandparents

7 Getting Started (Continued) Later you will continue to add folders for additional families to this first set of folders. If you have a computer, set up your family history program and practice using it. Be sure to learn how to document sources for your information and include that also.

8 Getting Started (Continued) Talk with family members Visit with someone you know who is very organized Get to know your FHC Read A Member’s Guide to Temple and Family History Work

9 Family History Class Assignments  Set aside a place and a regular time to do family history  Get seven folders and label them for your parents, grandparents and great- grandparents  Begin gathering family certificates, letters and so on, from around your own home and file them in the appropriate folders.
