Rodent Breeding Colonies Bill Greer Penn State

The most Common Models  Colonies maintained by Animal Resources  Colonies are maintained by PI’s

OK, so What’s the Problem?   Numbers   Counting   Transferring   Strain Maintenance   Transgenic animals?

Problems – Ice Cream!!

How Many to Produce   How may the Animal Resource Program justify numbers?   How may the PI justify numbers? Maintain the strain Research needs Loss due to genotype Can only use one sex (M or F)

When do you count the animals? At   Birth   Weaning, or   Somewhere in between (e.g., first cage change)

Transferring from Breeding to Research Protocols? Counting against other protocols   Using it for research/teaching or testing? When to count Tracking the transfers

Any Guide Deviations? Maybe,   Single housing   Trio Breeding   Delayed cage changes

Transgenic?   Who’s making them – ARP, the PI, a service unit? IACUC and IBC Protocol   Any problematic phenotypes

How about if transgenic animals are made offsite   Using PHS funds?   Are you AAALAC accredited; is your collaborator? - Who owns the animals   Need an MOU?

What did we miss?
