Description: Use the naturally occurring albino mutation of corn plants as an example of genetic biodiversity. Goals: Describe how the impact of humans on the environment has increased over time.
2
Objectives: Day 10 Observe and examine genetic biodiversity among corn plants. Relate the importance of genetic biodiversity to species interaction and survival.
3
Warm-Up Question: Using the people in your class, provide two examples of “Genetic Variation”. (keep it respectful) Answer: Height, eye color, skin tone, hair color, body structure, foot size, … Think about it… What causes genetic variation?
4
Genetic Variation Genetic Variation is the expression of different traits in a population. Genes code for a specific trait to be shown (expressed) in an individual organism. ◦What you see is called the PHENO-type ◦The genetic code is called the GENO-type.
5
Genetic Variation Lab Determining geno- and pheno- types of corn by observation. Individually read through the background and directions for today’s lab. 1.Any part that doesn’t make sense place a question mark next to it. 2.Place an asterisk next to anything that seems important. 3.Your groups will be assigned. Ask your groups about your “?” and see if they agree with your “*”. If you need more help ask the teacher. 4.When finished you may collect materials and begin.
