Duties and Responsibilities of Citizens. As citizens of the United States we are expected to carry out certain duties and Responsibilities. Duties are things that we are required to do. If not you could be fined or imprisoned.

Responsibilities –are things we should do. Obligations that we fulfill voluntarily.

Duties of a United States Citizen. Obey the Laws (This is the most important duty.)

Pay Taxes Without taxes the government could not pay it employees maintain an army or Navy to protect its country.

Draft- a call up of men for military service. All United States men must register for the draft by age 18. There has been no draft since the end of the Vietnam war.

Serve in Court Every Citizen must be prepared to serve on a jury.(you must serve unless you have a really good excuse.) You also may be called as a witness.

Attend School In most states you are required to attend school until age 16 (NE = 18)

Responsibilities Not as clear cut as duties because they are voluntary. You cannot be arrested or punished if you fail to carry them out.

Be informed Know your rights. Know what the government is doing. If you do not what might happen.

Vote Voting is one of the most important responsibilities of an American Citizen.

Respect Rights of others. Keep radio down Don’t steal another persons parking spot. Respect other people’s property.

Respect Diversity Respects others regardless of their beliefs, practices or other differences. Toleration. Diversity is one of the United States greatest strengths.
