The Early Republic Around 600 BC, Rome began being ruled by kings. In 509, Rome established a republic. – Form of government in which power rests with citizens who have the right to vote for their leaders. – In Rome, citizenship with voting rights was granted only to free-born male citizens.

The Twelve Tables An important victory for the plebeians was to force the creation a written law code. – QUICKWRITE: Why would not having written laws be a problem? Laws were written down on 12 tablets, or tables, and hung in the Forum (political center of Rome)

Government in the Republic Consul: Two are elected to one-year terms. Chief executives and commanders in chief of the army Senate: 300 members chosen from aristocracy for life. Controls foreign and financial policies, and advises consuls.
