1 Occupations in Ancient Pompeii and Herculaneum

2 Pompeii Large community of artisans including artists, metalworkers, potters and glassblowers. Tradesmen, wealthy merchants, manufacturers and service industries employing bakers, innkeepers, bath attendants and brothel keepers.

3 Evidence Their artwork often depicted cupids (putti) engaged in various crafts and occupations of the townspeople The house of the Vetti has a sequence of 9 wall paintings in yellow, brown and gold on a black background showing cupids at work as goldsmiths, flower sellers, perfume makers and wine vendors.

4 Private Business In many houses, the peristyle (open courtyard) operated as a manufacturing workshop. E.G – In the house of M. Terentius Eudoxus there was a weaving workshop run by male and female slaves.

5 Banking and Money Lending
127 waxed tablets found at the Villa Murecine in 1959 They were the business transactions of Sulpicii family (bankers and moneylenders) They record details of loans, IOU’s and repayments including one loan to a woman
