Problem/Purpose Which structure would withstand the earthquake longer than the other? Which structure would withstand the earthquake longer than the other?

Research Our group researched that people are building stronger houses to withstand earthquakes. For example, in Haiti they’re building stronger houses because of they’re recent earthquake. We also learned that some buildings are more vulnerable than others. Finally, engineers test to see which kind of structure could withstand an ordinary earthquake. Hypothesis If we build 3 structures out of marshmallows and toothpicks, graham crackers and icing, and toothpicks and graham crackers then the marshmallows and toothpicks will fall first. Independent variable- the structure of the house. Independent variable- the structure of the house. Dependent variable- the amount of time the structures will fall. Materials Toothpicks ( 2 packs of 100) Cardboard box (cut in half) 1 table A stopwatch recording Paper pencil Graham crackers Icing marshmallows

Procedures Make the hypothesis in a “if, then” statement. Make the first house out of marshmallows and toothpicks. Make the second house out of graham crackers and icing. Make the third house out of graham crackers and toothpicks. Put the two houses on the shake table. We record the amount of shakes it takes to fall of the shake table or collapse. We make our conclusion based on data and our hypothesis.

Conclusion Part 1 If we build the three structures structures out of marshmallows, gram crackers, and toothpicks, then the tallest one would fall first. Our hypothesis was incorrect because the tallest structure fell second. One change would be our materials so we could make our results more accurate. Another change would be how hard we shake the structures each time. One thing that we think might of affected our results was how hard we shook our structures each time.

Conclusion Part 2 Different structures fall differently in earthquakes. Now we know heavier structures fall first, we would recommend that people should use lighter material and shorter structures. We say this because in our data, it showed that heavier structures fall first.
