3 The nature of local planning  Communities are changing  With or without plans and planners will continue to grow and change  But with no plan community may become a less desirable place in which to live.  Planning help prevent undesired changes from occurring.

4 The nature of local planning  Planning encourage working together to answer basic question : “What do we want our community to become?”.  This involve setting immediate and long range goals.  Setting objectives is not easy, because of diverse special interest group.

5 The nature of local planning  Planning is: life – enriching not life –supporting.  Help manage resources  Anticipate problems.  Never ending process

6 New dimension of planning  Population Shift  Changing Life Style  Planning for People  Citizen Participation  Economic Development  Fiscal Retrenchment

7 New dimension of planning  Population shift.  Sudden increase or decrease in population affect small towns in which they are located.

8 New dimension of planning Changing lifestyle: changing social and economic values. economic values.  Rising cost of land, and energy make suburbia less attractive.  Innovative zoning and building codes includes: townhouses, and duplexes- enabling people to live closer together and nearer to work and shopping centers

9 New dimension of planning  Planning for people  Planning has historically been focused on land use.  Increasingly,planning becoming more people oriented.

10 New dimension of planning  Citizen participation  Incorporating the views of as many individual as possible into the planning process will mean that plans will better reflect the future that citizen want for their community.

11 New dimension of planning  Economic development : keep people working.  Bring new jobs.  Planners help identify development projects, bring together public and private investors and then coordinate the necessary funding.  Also, where should those firms be located  Extending services to the suburbs is becoming more costly. Thus economic development may lead back to older neighborhood.  Planners to focus their attention on improving the existing physical structure and renovation of old commercial district.

12 New dimension of planning  Fiscal retrenchment  Cut services and increase efficiency.  Keep down the cost of government cost:  Place more of development cost on individuals  Estimate cost / benefits of existing equipment.  Initiate user charges  Increase license and permits fees  Initiate joint purchasing to save money  Employ private contractors

13 Planning Participants  Chief administrative officers  Professional planner (gather information, advise planning commission, and distribute ideas and information upon request).  The Planning consultant  The planning commission (reprehensive of the community in planning process)

14 Planning Activities  Plan for the future and implement those plans. Specifically:  Developing the comprehensive plan and economic, population, and land- use studies that support it.  Developing specific plan such as : housing, street and highway, parks and recreation, civic center, neighborhood redevelopment, community appearance.  Collect information  Planning documents  Plans are implemented by zoning,and subdivision regulations
