DENSITY
2
What is Density?
3
What are the units of density?
4
How to state the Density units
5
EXAMPLE
6
What did you get?
7
Can the density of an object change? NO Mass and volume are proportional –If you decrease mass, you decrease volume
8
Let me prove it to you!
9
Lets look at some specific Densities
10
Anything with a density of < 1g/cm 3 will float in water Anything with a density of > 1g/cm 3 will sink in water
11
ARCHIMEDES Greek scholar, given credit for first explaining the force of buoyancy. He supposedly made this “discovery” while bathing… that is, he noticed the water level in his bath raised when he entered the tub!
12
Archimedes Principle The buoyant force of an object is equal to the weight of the fluid displaced by the object
13
WEIGHT > BUOYANT FORCE THEN THE OBJECT SINKS WEIGHT = BUOYANT FORCE THEN THE OBJECT IS SUSPENDED WEIGHT < BUOYANT FORCE THEN THE OBJECT FLOATS
