3 Restoring Stability in France
Foreign Minister of Austria, Metternich, leads the Congress of Vienna. Distrusted the Revolution, Prevent French aggression by surrounding it with stronger countries. Contain France Restore a balance of power. (Alliances) Restore Europe’s royal families.

4 Legitimacy France required to give up all territory gained under Napoleon. All monarchs kicked out by Napoleon are put back into power Fair treatment for all, no grudges. Allowed peace until 1853 (Crimean War)

5 Conservative Europe Alliances form between Absolutist rulers.
Concert of Europe added to the alliance system, aid would arrive for any conflict between powers. However, Enlightenment ideas were out there, and new philosophies emerge. Constitutional Monarchy is maintained in England and France. Russia, Prussia, and Austria maintained Absolutism.

7 Political Changes Beyond Vienna
Three Philosophies Dominate. Conservatism A desire for absolute rule, or rule of a Monarch. Liberalism Wanted more rights, voting for the middle class and more power given to Parliament/Chamber of Deputies. Nationalism A pride for country emerges, and this would lead to conflict.

8 Discussion: For five minutes, quietly write as much as you know about the 1800s, World War I, and Patriotism. I guarantee I can relate 90% of events in that 100-year span to the Congress of Vienna. Our discussion today will show how one event can begin a chain reaction towards World War.
