2 Activate Prior Knowledge  Think about a very large city that you know. What facts can you share about that city?  What information can you share about a small community?  What have you read or heard people say about why they live in a big city or a small town?

5 Ask and Answer Questions Questions A Community Like Mine Answers Page 19 Why do people work for free? I know that some people volunteer because they are making a difference by helping people. I can put together what I know with the text on this page and infer that people work for free because they want to help others. Page 20 What might happen to goods like desks? What important information have we read about goods that might help us? Goods are things people make. People send goods to places that need them. What do we already know about who needs desks? Students and workers need desks. Desks may be sent to schools and offices. Page 23 * Practice asking and answering questions

7 Multisyllabic Words of up to Three Syllables Different- there are 3 vowels: i, er, and e Each vowel sound belongs to a separate syllable. How many syllables are in different? (clap it out) Rules: When two consonants come together in the middle of a word, break the word between the two consonants. With a vowel-consonant-vowel pattern (e-r-e), separate after the consonant r so the er sound stays together.

10 Grammar Using Verbs with Subjects  Subjects that name one person, place, or thing take present tense verbs that end in –s or –es.  Subjects that name more than one DO NOT take present tense verbs that end in –s or –es.  Create sentences using these verbs: help, jump, talk, listen, and splash

11 Write a Biography Characteristics of a Biography:  Is made up by the writer.  Has characters that may be people or animals.  Has a setting that tells when and where the story happens.  Has a problem that characters need to solve.  Has a beginning, middle, and end.  Tells events in the order they happen.

12 Biography of Mr. Henderson Mr. Henderson is the maintenance man at our school. He is also a father and a baseball coach. He is special because he helps kids in our community. Mr. Henderson was born in 1957. He played Little League baseball for seven years from 1964 to 1971. Then he was the catcher on his high school baseball team. In 1980 Mr. Henderson became the maintenance man at our school and has been working here ever since. In 1985 he helped put out a fire in the cafeteria. In 1988 Mr. Henderson started coaching baseball. He has had a winning team for 15 years.

13 Friend Biography Stephanie was born on February 13 th, 1980. She is ten years old. Stephanie was born in Texas and moved to Pennsylvania when she was four. There are five people in Stephanie’s family. Along with her mom and dad, she has two brothers and one sister. Their names are Jake, Joseph, and Sarah. Gymnastics is Stephanie’s favorite past time. She has been doing it for three years. The name of her gym is Parkettes and she practices two days a week. Stephanie attends school in Emmaus. Her favorite part of school is math, she likes to solve problems. When she grows up she wants to be a math teacher.
