PROVEN effective 787 employees of Kaiser Permanente of Northern California mean age: 44 years 37% non-white Unlike other web based programs … Alive! has been proven effective, in a CDC-funded clinical trial
2
Results of the Trial Alive! participants improved significantly more than Control group More minutes of Moderate Activity, p=0.0002 Increased Fruit/Vegetable intake, p=0.03 Lower Saturated Fat and trans fats intake, p=0.02 Improved reported Quality of Life, p=0.03 Note: a p-value less than.05 means that it is not likely to be due to chance
3
Large Changes Were Seen Saturated fat – Decreased 3.95 grams/day Moderate physical activity – Increased 46 minutes/week Trans fats – Decreased 1.49 grams/day These were the results among people aged 50+ who needed improvement
4
Lasting Changes Significant differences between the intervention and control groups were still observed 4 months after the intervention ended.
5
Alive participants had a significant improvement in standard measures of quality of life (SF8 Physical, SF8 Mental, Self-Assessed Health Status) Possible reasons for improved quality of life: Improved nutrition and physical activity Improved self-confidence, because weekly goals were easily achievable and tailored to their own lives Improved Quality of Life
