NOUNS Please take careful notes, with the header NOUNS. The words in brown are those you need to write down.

Nouns Nouns are defined as a PERSON, PLACE, THING or IDEA. A PROPER NOUN names a specific person, place or thing. (Mr. Lucero, NBHS, Pacific Ocean) A COMMON NOUN names a general person, place or thing. (principal, school, ocean)

ABSTRACT NOUNS Nouns that are IDEAS, or ABSTRACT NOUNS, are things which are not tangible (cannot be touched). Warmth, justice, happiness, love, democracy, anger, hatred, etc., are all ABSTRACT NOUNS.

CATEGORIES OF NOUNS COUNT NOUNS, which name anything that can be counted (FIVE books, THREE oceans, A FEW dishes, SEVERAL buildings). Count nouns can be pluralized (girls, boys, chairs) Count nouns can use “many” (many girls, many boys, many chairs) Count nouns can use “a few” (a few girls, a few boys, a few chairs) Count nouns can use “some” (some girls, some boys, some chairs)

MASS NOUNS, which name things that cannot be counted (chalk, blood, air, energy). Mass nouns are not pluralized (you don’t say “chalks” or “airs”) Mass nouns use “much” (much energy, much chalk, much blood) Mass nouns use “a little” (a little energy, a little blood)

COLLECTIVE NOUNS, which are single words that mean a group of people or things (jury, team, class, committee, herd)

Instructions Divided into pairs, you will be given an envelope of nouns. Your job is to categorize them appropriately. The categories of nouns will be COLLECTIVE ABSTRACT MASS COUNT You will find these headers in your envelope of words, on a full sheet of paper. Lay the paper with the four headers on your desk, and then proceed to categorize your nouns. (Some words may go in more than one column—that’s okay! Just choose one.) There are TEN words FOR EACH CATEGORY.
