2 Background  Archimedes was born in 287 BC and died in 212 BC, when he was killed by a Roman soldier  Spent most of his early education in Syracuse except the time he went to Alexandria, Italy to receive a better education.  He studied math, science, poetry, politics, astronomy, music, art, and military tactics.  His big opportunity came when he got the chance to study Mathematics founded by Euclid.

3 Family  Father was an Astronomer  He belonged to a Greek family that always encouraged him on getting a good education and be knowledgeable.  Said to be a relative of Hiero II, presumably lived a royal life.

4 Facts  Famous for contributions to math like; the use infinitesimals in a way that is similar to modern integral calculus, the mathematical prove of the formula for area of a circle, and the solution to the problem as an infinite geometric series.  Under the guidance of two great mathematicians and scholars: Conon of Samos, and Eratosthenes of Cyrene, he grew up to be a great scientist.

5 Branches of science involved in  Archimedes was a mathematician Physicist, Engineer, Inventor, and Astronomer.

6 Major Contributions  Devised a method used in determining the density of gold and successfully proved that silver was mixed with gold in a gold crown.  Developed a screw for emptying water out of the hold of a big ship.  Made a Claw to defend his hometown of Syracuse.
