Mini Lesson: Irony

Brainstorm! Think of a time you‘ve said something sarcastic. Think of a time when an unexpected twist happened to you...where something happened to you that you didn‘t expect. Think of a movie you‘ve seen where you knew something was going to happen, but the character(s) didn‘t know it.

Irony The difference between appearance and reality, expectation and result. A surprise or unexpected result!

Types of Irony -Verbal Irony: a word or phrase used to suggest the opposite of its actual meaning Example: Sarcasm Think of sarcastic comments or remarks. How are they examples of irony? Think of sarcastic comments or remarks. How are they examples of irony?

Types continued… -Situational Irony: When an event directly contradicts expectations of the reader or of the characters What is ironic is this image?
