Chapter 19 Your Body’s Reproductive System
2
Lesson 1 The Male Reproductive System Reproduction is the essential function of living organisms.
3
Functions and Structure Teen years male reproductive system reaches maturity Hormone released by the pituitary gland stimulates the testes The testes, 2 small glands, begin producing testosterone Testosterone initiates physical changes Boarding if shoulders Development of muscles Facial/body hair Deepening of voice Causes the production of sperm, reproductive cells
4
Two biological functions Production of sperm Transfer of it to the women’s body
5
External Male Reproductive Organs
6
External Organs Testicles Testicles produce sperm 100 million a day Shaped like tadpoles 500 lined up would measure a inch Testes hang outside the body in a sac called the scrotum Temp rises testes lower away from body Temp drops testes puller closer to body Tight clothing can interfere with the production
7
Penis Spongy tissue that contains many blood vessels Increased blood flow = erection Erections can be a result of become sexually aroused @ the height of sexual arousal a series of muscular contractions known as ejaculation Semen is propelled from the penis This may result in fertilization
8
External organs Cont. @ birth the top of the penis is covered with a fold of skin called foreskin Circumcision is done to remove this Not every one has this done
9
Internal Organs Play a role in the delivery of sperm
10
Epididymis Highly coiled structured located on the back side of each of the testes Stores newly produced sperm Maturation of the sperm continues in this structure Takes about 64 days for sperm to be fully mature
11
Vas Deferens 18 in Long tube that connects the epididymis with the urethra This is where the mature sperm go next Here sperm can’t move on its own, the VD is lined with cilia that help propel the sperm through the tube just before ejaculation
12
Seminal Vesicle FFluid filled pouch that secretes fluid that mixes with the sperm as it moves through the vas deferens TThese are glands about two inches long and attached to the vas deferens near the base of the bladder TThis fluid provides nourishment to sperm and also allows it be mobile
13
Care Cleanliness-shower daily Protection-wear protector or supporter during sports Self examination-any lumps, thickenings or changing in texture or size. Detecting cancer early is the key to successful treatment.
14
Problems of the Male Reproductive System
15
Inguinal Hernia This is a weak spot in the lower abdominal wall near the top of the scrotum. Straining can cause a tear and the intestine can push through the tear.
16
Sterility unable to reproduce less than 20 million sperm environmental reason exposure to x-rays radiation lead from motor exhaust temperature change exposure to chemicals. smoking mumps as an adult STD
17
Enlarged prostate Gland this tends to squeeze the urethra cause infection tumor old age treatment includes special exercises to improve bladder control Medicine to shrink it or relax it surgery to remove excess tissue
18
Cancer of the prostate Gland cancer is an uncontrolled growth of cells. 2nd highest cancer of males Early detection is important It can be treated if it is just in the gland. removal radiation hormone therapy
19
Cancer of the Testes most frequently in males 15-35 1st sign can be an enlarged testes there is not always pain possibly a dull ache lower abdomen and groin hard lumps or nodules on the testes 90% of cases are cured if detected early
