WARM UP-What does CEP mean again? Branches of Science Matching Game 1. Chemistry a. the study of the universe beyond Earth 2. Physics b. the study of the composition, structure, properties of matter 3. Geology c. the study of the origin and behavior of living things 4. Astronomy d. the study of matter and energy and the interactions between the two through forces and motion 5. Biology e. the study of the origin, history and structure of the earth

a. A is accurate and precise, C is inaccurate and precise b. B is imprecise and inaccurate, D is accurate and imprecise c. A and D have similar precision but D is more accurate d. C and D have similar accuracy, but D is more precise. Warm up – precision and accuracy

LAB SCENERIOS Question: How does temperature affect the rate of a chemical reaction? Background: Hydrogen peroxide breaks down into water and oxygen gas. This will happen slowly. It might take days for all of the hydrogen peroxide to change into water and oxygen gas. Materials: Hydrogen peroxide (a clear liquid), graduated cylinders, beakers, hot plate, ice and thermometer. Your job - design an experiment, using the materials available that answers the question given. Write a procedure and be sure to label the independent and dependent variables as well as you control.

LAB SCENERIOS 2 Design an experiment, using the materials available that answers the question given. Write a procedure and be sure to label the independent and dependent variables as well as you control. Question: How does the concentration of an acidic solution affect how quickly it reacts with a piece of Mg? Background: Most acids react vigorously with active metals. When the metal makes contact with the acid, bubbles form, indicating the production of gas. Eventually the metal “disappears” as it reacts completely with the acid. Materials: Several 1 gram pieces of Magnesium ribbon. HCl (hydrochloric acid that is concentrated, meaning it has not been diluted with water). Graduated cylinders, beakers, stopwatch.

Scientific Notation Scientific Notation – a way of expressing a value as the product of a number between 1 and 10 and a power of 10. For example 300,000,000 = 3.0 x 10 8 Put into scientific notation a) 3,450 b) 0.0356 c) 500,000,000,000 d) 6,780,000 e) 0.0000002 f) 0.00469 g) 89,000 h) 0.00768 i) 0.0000009 j) 900,000,000,000

Put into standard numbers a) 1 x 10 -5 b) 2.3 x 10 7 c) 1 x 10 -9 d) 4.5 x 10 10 e) 4 x 10 -5 f) 5.0 x 10 8 g) 6.5 x 10 -2 h) 9.0 x 10 2
