Life Vocabulary: (main section)  Biology - The study of life  Biotic - living  Abiotic - non-living  Cell - basic unit of life  Sexual Reproduction - process in which genetic material from two parents combines and produces offspring that differ genetically from either parent  Asexual Reproduction - process by which a single parent reproduces by itself  Growth - increase in size  Development - The process of change that occurs during an organism's life to produce a more complex organism.  Differentiation - change in structure and function of a cell as it matures; specialization  Metabolism - all of the chemical reactions that occur within an organism  Homeostasis - Process by which organisms maintain a relatively stable internal environment  Evolution - the process by which species gradually change over time  Organism - A living thing --has all eight characteristics of life

5 topics that we will cover this year 1. Introduction to science. (inquiry) 2. Life science 3. Physical Science 4. Chemistry 5. Earth Science

What is LIFE?

Biology  Biology – break it into root words?????

Biology  Biology – study of life

Is fire alive? Leave some space, come back at the end and try to answer this.

Six characteristics of life: 1.Composed of cells 2.Living things reproduce 3.Grow and develop 4.Use and obtain energy 5.Respond to their environment 6.Homeostasis

Scientist are sceptics A sceptic - someone who questions something. fact checker, not ignoramus So, who decided what life is? Is it an accurate system? Is it possible that life is something different than what we define it as?

1. Living things are composed of cells  All living things have cells

1. Living things are composed of cells  All living things have cells  Cells are never formed by non- living things

2. Living things reproduce  All living things die, so reproduction is necessary  2 types  Sexual - two cells from different individuals unite to produce new cell (new individual)

2. Living things reproduce  Asexual - single organism reproduces without the aid of another.  More simple - some organisms simply divide in two.

3. Living things grow and develop  All living things are capable of growth

4. Living things use and obtain energy  Living things obtain energy from their environment.  Different types??

4. Living things use and obtain energy  Photosynthesis - plant energy from sun  Metabolism - energy from food  Chemosynthesis - energy from chemical sources

5. Living things respond to their environment  Can be fast (behavior), or slow (metabolism or growth)

5. Living things respond to their environment  Can be fast (behavior), or slow (metabolism or growth)  Cause of change called stimulus

5. Living things respond to their environment  Can be fast (behavior), or slow (metabolism or growth)  Cause of change called stimulus  Living things respond in ways that improve chances of survival

6. Homeostasis  The processes by which organisms respond to stimuli in ways that keep their body suitable for life  Examples in humans? Book: Chemicals of life.

6. Homeostasis  The processes by which organisms respond to stimuli in ways that keep their body suitable for life  Humans: warm blooded, sweat, shivering, sickness, waste excretion, etc.

Date: Is your car alive?  Entry question; please use the 6 characteristics of life and tell me if a car is alive. Please write a good response. Defend your answer.

Is your car alive?  1.made of cells?  2.reproduce?  3. grow and develop?

Is your car alive?  4. Use and obtain energy?  5. Respond to their environment?  6. Homeostasis (maintain there environment)?

Other aspects of life?  All things die If there is time:

Other aspects of life?  All things die  Based on DNA

Other aspects of life?  All things die  Based on DNA  Communicate

Other aspects of life?  All things die  Based on DNA  Communicate  Organization

Other aspects of life?  All things die  Based on DNA  Communicate  Organization  Gas exchange

Other aspects of life?  All things die  Based on DNA  Communicate  Organization  Gas exchange  Evolve
