1966, scientist Charles Kao developed fibre-optic cables — glass fibers that carry huge amounts of information in the form of light rather than electricity. 2009 - He won the Nobel Prize in Physics half of the prize, "for ground-breaking achievements concerning the transmission of light in fibre’s for optical communication“ Then the technology that was already in place it was adapted to allow internet connectivity to allow a faster method of broadband internet, with speeds of up to 50mbps. Originated in America, However it was too expensive to be used widespread, system cost $250,000 and $1,000 per hour to run. 1990’s - technical advances in Internet Protocol (IP) and more efficient video compression technologies were developed that would allow desktop or PC-based videoconferencing. 1991 - Wi-Fi was invented by Vic Hayes an American business man, NCR Corporation Then products were brought on the market under the name WaveLAN with speeds of 1Mbps/2Mbps. However other businesses were rolling out cheaper Wi- Fi solutions so the creator of Wi-Fi retired from the business.
