1 Watercolor Seascape Notes 1. 3 places for a brush: in your hand, lying on the table, stored bristles up. 2. ***Never never never leave a paintbrush in a cup of water!!! 3. Rinse water often. 4. Rinse brush thoroughly between colors. 5. Squeeze gently - do not tug on bristles. 6. Do not paint directly from the paint palette - use your tray to mix and paint from there.

2 Remember: ***Never Never Never leave a paintbrush in a cup of water!!!

3 Composition - The arrangement of elements in a work of art. The Elements of Art Line – Shape – Form – Space - Value – Texture – Color hierarchy the relative order of importance of the imagery and elements included. Composition creates a hierarchy within the work, which tells the viewer the relative order of importance of the imagery and elements included.

4 Wash - the laying down of watercolor in a smooth transparent layer. Transparent - a layer of paint in which the white of the paper is visible through the paint. Opaque - a layer of paint that blocks out the white of the paper or other paint layers behind it.

5 Scale of color - the orderly series of tones with a color; thus, yellow running from full strength to white, or from yellow to black. Dry brush - a paint brush that is mostly dry, but still holding paint; a dry brush has lots of color. (scratchy look!) Wet brush – a brush with lots of color and water; used for a wash.
