Evidence-Based Teaching: Evaluative Strategies ED 880.629.9B MARCH 13, 2012 Dr. Anne Belcher, Dr. Linda Adamson, Instructors

Learning Objectives  Learners will be able to:  Clarify understandings of content presented in on-line class Session 7 and identify insights of value in on-line discussion by participating in a class discussion  Review class feedback on prior class sessions to distill insights for improving teaching and learning  Provide thoughtful feedback at the mid-point in this course to improve the teaching and learning for the rest of the semester by completing mid-term evaluation  Integrate understanding of a variety of aspects of test construction with personal background knowledge by using two different articles/chapters to inform peer test item creation

Learning Objectives (contd.)  Learners will be able to:  Expand their familiarity with the uses of opinion polling in instruction by participating in a classroom opinion poll  Demonstrate their understanding of how to develop high-quality rubrics to both guide and evaluate learning products by participating in a group rubric creation activity  Contribute to peers’ progress in this course by contributing meaningfully to collegial conversation in project feedback groups

Processing the On-Line Learning  Share value & challenges of different format  Review Self-confidence survey  Take-aways from collegial conversation in discussion threads

Processing summary learner feedback  Please review the documents summarizing feedback from 3 previous class sessions.  Any insights, personal requests for follow-up, recommendations?

Mid-Term Survey  Please provide your thoughtful, reflective feedback on the points identified in the document provided.  NO names, please!!

How Useful Are Test Items – really? …

Testing in the World of Health Education  Unpack your experiences  With a classmate, use the TWO assessment articles:  To IDENTIFY at least TWO ways to assess your students’ learning in new/modified ways  To CLARIFY how these ways of assessing learning could help (a) your students, (b) you as the instructor, or (c) both!  To CREATE one or two assessment items of a type that could contribute to your project (or to your own teaching) [option: make modifications to improve the quality of items you have already designed]

Opinion Polling  How can classroom opinion polling contribute to overall learning and engagement?

RUBRICS  IDENTIFY ways you are currently using rubrics in your own teaching  Who designs them?  Who uses them?  How valuable are they?  Create an analytical rubric  See models  What are key features?

Reflect on the Learning: 3 – 2 – 1  3: What are 3 things you learned, new insights, new ways the dots connected for you (any combination!) in this class session?  2: What are 2 things you are going to do to move your project forward in the next week?  1: What is 1 suggestion for improving the learning in this class session? Additional questions/comments?
