5 How Self-Concept Develops Begins in early years, but develops as you grow People that are given support, encouragement, and love tend to develop a positive self concept Remarks given by family, friends, teachers and way they act toward you can reinforce the view you have of yourself

6 Self-Concept and Self - Esteem Closely tied to self concept is your self esteem SELF CONCEPT – way you feel about yourself SELF ESTEEM – way you feel about body, mind, emotions are all part of self esteem

7 Low self Esteem Often linked to an Unrealistic self concept Self esteem is formed, partly, by messages the you receive from people Also formed by messages you send yourself

8 Self Esteem and Your Health Self esteem has a great impact on your health People with high self esteem like themselves and take care of themselves People with low self esteem are more likely to be involved with high risk behavior such as risk taking, alcohol, drugs

9 Improving your Self Esteem Focus on successes Send yourself positive messages Set realistic goals Ask people for help when you need it Learn from your mistakes
