2 PRAISE VS. ENCOURAGEMENT Is this the same thing?? Why? Both focus on positive behaviors!.....BUT…..

3 PRAISE Is a reward based on completion Given for winning and being the best EX: “If you do something I consider good, I will reward you by recognizing you.” EXTERNAL REWARDS!

4 ENCOURAGEMENT Given for effort or improvement. Focuses on child’s strengths NO comparing to other children Helps a child feel worthy Given when child is feeling that they are not doing well or when they are facing failure. INTERNAL REWARD/ MODIVATION

5 PRAISE PLACES VALUE JUDGMENT ON CHILDREN “You are such a good Boy” “I’m so proud of you!”

6 ENCOURAGEMENT FOCUSES ON INTERNAL EVALUATION AND CONTRIBUTIONS. Demonstrates acceptance:  “I like the way you handled it.”  I’m glad you enjoy learning.” Show confidence:  You’ll make it.”  Knowing you, I am sure you’ll do fine. Recognize effort and improvement  “It looks like you really worked hard on that project.”  “Look at that progress you have made,”

7 CAUSES FOR BEHAVIOR ISSUES Stage of Growth:  Tattle; temper tantrum= completely normal! Unfulfilled Needs:  Need are not met= causes acting out. Environment:  Uncomfortable in his/her environment  Cold/ hungry  “Okay?”

8 CAUSES FOR BEHAVIOR ISSUES Doesn’t know Better  Never been taught.  Soap in the dishwasher Natural Curiosity  Drowning a cat to see if it really has 9 lives. Get attention:  Fix: notice the good/ positive. Ignore the negative (if possible) For Power= control For Revenge= get even Feeling inadequate or incapable. (why we do math games at Pioneer) Need to feel like they belong, peer pressure.

9 CAN YOU TELL ME WHY THIS CHILD IS ACTING OUT??

10 CAN YOU CHANGE THE SITUATION? MAKE IT + Don’t run in the classroom!  Ex: Please walk in the classroom Don’t play in the mud. Don’t eat with your fingers. Don’t put your fingers in your mouth. Don’t put your shoes on the wrong feet. YOU CAN’T EAT THAT!

11 CAN YOU CHANGE THE SITUATION? MAKE IT + You can’t go in there! Don’t whine! Don’t spill your milk! Don’t forget your backpack!
