1 The Light Compound Microscope
Goal: Students will know the parts of a microscope and how to properly use it

2 How many did you get correct? COARSE-ADJUSTMENT KNOB
Eyepiece COARSE-ADJUSTMENT KNOB BODY TUBE NOSEPIECE FINE-ADJUSTMENT KNOB HIGH-POWER OBJECTIVE ARM LOW-POWER OBJECTIVE STAGE STAGE CLIPS DIAPHRAGM BASE LIGHT SOURCE

3 Parts of the Microscope
1. Eyepiece, magnifies the image 10x 2. low-power objective, magnifies the image 4x 3. medium-power objective, magnifies the image 10x 4. high-power objective, magnifies the image 40x eyepiece x objective = total magnification

4 5. Nosepiece turns to change objectives
6. Body tube keeps eyepiece and objectives at correct distances 7. coarse-adjustment knob, focuses image rapidly (good for low power) 8. fine-adjustment knob, focuses image slowly (good for high power)

5 Stage holds slide. Stage clips, keep slide from moving 11. Diaphragm, allows light to enter stage 12. Light provides light 13. Arm, supports body tube. 14. Base, supports the microscope.

6 How to use the microscope:
Always begin on low power. Use the coarse adjustment knob (big knob) to find specimen. Use the fine focus knob to focus. Switch to medium or high power only AFTER successfully finding specimen on low power NEVER use the coarse adjustment on high power EVER!

7 clean-up: Turn light off. Change objective to low power.
move the stage to its lowest position. Remove any specimens or slide from stage.
