6 Served as a garrison- air corps came to protect and train for new jobs- SPECIFICALLY PILOTS

7 Storage Facilities Stored bombs and ammunition Salt Lake City, Ogden, Clearfield, and Tooele

8 Wendover Air Force Base Trained the pilots who dropped the atomic bomb

9 Dugway Proving Grounds and Deseret Chemical Depot Handled chemical warfare materials

10 Standard Parachute Company In Manti they manufactured parachutes until after the war

11 UTAH was part of the war effort more than most states. These facilities brought jobs to Utahans as well as PROSPERITY

12 Why Utah? Utah was inland, from the coasts so safer Utah had open spaces for training Utah had a good transportation system Utah is rich in natural resources Utah had a well-educated labor force Utah already had defense facilities

13 Navajo Code-talkers Remained a secret till 1980s Used the Navajo language to pass information Only code the Japanese couldn’t break.

14 POWs in UTAH!!! German and Italian POWs were sent to Ogden While in camp they constructed, repaired building, worked in warehouses, prepared food in kitchens, farmed, built ski runs
