Baseball Mechanic Tutorial The following situations are meant to serve as a guide based on the field mechanic class All situations assume a normal fielder setup All situations assume no interference or obstruction The following tutorial is for baseball 2 man mechanics All situations have no umpire going out a fly ball

Plate Mechanics Has all CATCH – NO CATCH calls Has STRIKE – BALL. Has all FAIR-FOUL calls Base Mechanics Has call on Batter Runner TO 1 st base. Has calls on bases Has tag up responsibilities Help with check swing calls Help with “pulled foot” request by base umpire

Positioning No runner P B Start 10-15 behind 1 st base in foul territory This is called the “A” position From here the BU can move parallel to the base line to make calls at 1 st From here the BU can buttonhook inside to watch the tag at 1 st and take runner to 2 nd B

Positioning Runner at 1 st P About ½ way between 2 nd and the pitchers mound off the left shoulder of the pitcher Draw an imaginary line from the corner of home plate and about 8 feet from the pitcher plate R This is called the “B” position The working area B Stay in here until the ball takes you to the play

Positioning P R This is called the “C” position The working area B R R Runners at 2nd & 3rd Bases Loaded Runners at 1 st and 3 rd Runner 2nd R R R R R

Fly Ball position P P Move as far as needed to make the call When the Fly ball is close to the foul line, the Plate umpire should be straddling the foul line. The Base Umpire has all tag up responsibilities. Always try to move perpendicular to the ball

P B Fly Ball Coverage w/ runners RF LF R SS 2 nd Plate Umpire has ALL catch-no catch calls Move perpendicular to ball

B P Straddle foul line as quickly as possible Bounding Ball Coverage w/ no runners Bounding ball FAIR BALL FOUL BALL PU has call to front of the base Plate Umpire makes call

B P Plate Umpire trails runner to ½ way to start of running lane Exit to the left of the catcher Buttonhook inside to see BR touch 1 st PU heads back home to take call Ground ball to Outfield w/ no runners Take runner to 2 nd if he continues Take runner to 3 rd if he continues Start in foul territory 12-18 feet behind 1 st base B BR B

Responsibilities and Positions Move toward the play Plate Umpire should be ready to move up the lines. The Base Umpire has all tag up responsibilities. Base Umpire should always position himself / herself far enough away from the nearest fielder to avoid interfering with the play. Plate Umpire has all catch no-catch responsiblities.

P B Plate Umpire trails runner to ¼ way to start of running lane Ground ball to Infield w/ no runners B Move enough to maintain 45 o angle

P B Go up 3 rd base line but watch for obstruction call at 1 st Follow ball and watch for play at 2 nd If R continues to 3 rd, be prepared to call play on BR at 2 nd PU is prepared to go to home for call P PU will take call at 3rd Runner at 1 st w/ ground ball to outfield R B BR R
