1. ICESS Computing The ICESS Computing committee was re-formed and identified areas of focus. The goal of the computational component of ICESS is to be the leader in Earth System Science computing at UCSB. This leads to the following priorities: Fast access & ability to manipulate large data volumes Large data set security (back-up) Computing cluster support Scientific software (licensing, inter-group support, etc.) Publishing projects & data sets on the web Fast network within ICESS & to points beyond ESS Collaboratory Grid computing (need faculty leadership)‏

2. ICESS Compute Env: WTF? Huge modernization remodel. Retirement of relic systems and services. Old DECs, Old Suns, Old Gentoo systems, Windows PDC. Migration to LDAP from NIS and new Email server. Moving forward: CentOS will be the primary OS for servers and single service/system Most servers will be Xen virtual systems removes dependence on hardware, better disaster recovery, decreases energy consumption (less hardware, less cooling, less electricity...)

6. Backups and Storage New Disk Paradigm: Larger servers based on Hardware RAID using SATA drives. Generally lower costs and higher reliability. Self documenting organization/naming conventions. Disk Based backups: All unix disk currently on disk backups PCs: rdiff-backup via smb/cifs proxy server. MACs: rdiff-backup direct to desktop. TimeMachine? Have migrated all ICESS users to new user disk server PrePurchase (Eqpt = no overhead) or Recharge... inventory.

7. SOOP Network upgrades Power upgrades Networked UPSs and monitoring PDUs. New firewall Stateful and default-deny. Other SOOP: WIKIs, ssh/sftp/ftp, ICESS portal overhaul (alamo), DHCP, SMB, revisit of wireless, Use of "clusters" for fail-over/redundancy/performance, List Server, RT, DNS, ZFS, network management... North Hall Data Center: Primarily for research computing online 2011, ~100 racks, secure, KVM provided...

8. New Initiatives Green Computing Initiative at ICESS. As Climate Scientists we should be leading this endeavour Do good for the environment and ICESS computing too. Improve campus & community visibility of ICESS science accomplishments. Earth System Science Collaboratory How can researchers best share our ESS data/computing resources? Baby Steps - Catalogue what we have & what we can share - then work out the means by which we will share them Need Leadership - Jim Frew to lead this initiative Will lead to new research opportunities
