2 Famous Women Jane Addams becomes the first woman to win the Nobel Peace Prize for her work with the poor in Chicago. Amelia Earhart becomes the first woman to fly solo across the Atlantic Ocean. Hattie Wyatt Caraway of Arkansas becomes the first woman elected to the U.S. Senate. Frances Perkins is appointed secretary of labor, becoming the first woman U.S. cabinet member.

3 Women During the Depression The Depression did little to alter the role of women in the American workplace. According to the 1930 census almost eleven million women, or 24.3 percent of all women in the country, were gainfully employed. Three out of every ten of these working women were in domestic or personal service. Of professional women three-quarters were schoolteachers or nurses. The Women in the 1930s in fact entered the workforce at a rate twice that of men.

4 Womens Fashion Most of the clothing worn by women in the 1930’s were lose and somewhat baggy most of the time.
