Figurative language is different types of writing that will help improve your story. Types of figurative language are Idioms, Similes, metaphors, Personification, Hyperboles, and Alliteration. Now, grab a pencil and a piece of paper and get ready for FIGURATIVE LANGUAGE! WELCOME TO FIGURATIVE LANGUAGE!

Idioms are figures of speech not meant to be taken literally. Example: I laughed my head of What it really means: you’re laughing really hard Example: My jaw dropped What it really means: you’re surprised by something Can you guess this Idiom?

A Hyperbole is an extreme exaggeration meant to prove a point an give the reader a funny visual in their head Example: Near my house there are mosquitoes the size of helicopters Point: The mosquitoes near my house are REALLY big Yo Mamma jokes are examples of Hyperboles

Personification means to give human qualitys to non-living objects. Example: the sower was angry at me and was spitting on me Example: At 6:30 my alarm clock started screaming at me Example: Cars uses Personification.

A Metaphor is comparing something to something else WITHOUT using like or as. Simile: My brother’s as slimy as a snail. Metaphor: My brother’s a snail Example: --------------------------------------

A Simile is comparing something to something else USING like or as. Example: my brother’s as messy as a pig. Example: --------------------------------------

Alliteration is using the first letter of a word in most of the words in a scentence. Example: Spongebob Squarepants Example: yurtle the turtle Example: Thomas took my toothbrush
