Renewable/Non-renewable Energy Sources in our Local Area Bower Park Academy

Essex Our local area is in the small British county of Essex, located in the South East of the United Kingdom and consists of many different areas such as Colchester, Lakeside and Dagenham. Our particular area happens to be Collier Row which is located in South Western Essex.

Renewable Energy Renewable energy is a type of energy which can be continually replenished on a human timescale and has a very low risk of it running out during our life time.

Types of Renewable Energy There are many types of renewable energy in this world such as : Hydropower Wind power Solar Power Biomass

Renewable Energy Sources in Essex There are quite a few different types of renewable energy on offer in Essex. This ranges from wind power all the way to biomass!

The people of ESSEX & Renewable energy Many houses, business and community projects are starting to use renewable energy.

Even some schools in Essex are getting involved Millfields Primary School have already cut their electric bill in half since installing solar panels.

Turncole Windfarm Turncole Windfarm is situated in the Dengie Peninsula. The Dengie peninsula has many characteristics which make it ideal for siting wind farms. It is relatively sparsely populated, so it will be able to maintain a good separation distance between turbines and homes. The data collected has demonstrated excellent wind speeds, the site is situated close to a grid network making it easy for distributing the power produced from the wind farm. This is how the energy is used within Essex.

The Future... Waltham Abbey Solar project. ONE of the most powerful solar energy farms in the country could cover nearly 20 acres of disused farmland if a developer gets the go-ahead. The proposal is to install enough solar energy panels to power 2,000 homes. The plan is to use land at Netherhouse Farm, near Waltham Abbey, covering the area of about 20 football pitches. Inspired by existing solar farms in Cornwall and Cambridgeshire when planning the £9 million development and planned to sell the electricity he generates back to the National Grid. “We need renewable energy in this country. It’s all over Europe and as usual, we’re the last to get hold of it.” Farm owner Mr Thompkins.

This is an example of successful solar power in Cornwall

Non-renewable Energy Sources in Essex As you can now see there are many different types of Renewable energy sources in Essex such as Turncole Windfarm just to give an example. But, there is also a reasonable amount of non-renewable energy sources in our local area.

Bradwell Nuclear Power Station Bradwell Nuclear Power Station is situated on the Dengie Peninsula in Essex at the mouth of the river Black Water. This particular energy source is non renewable as the atomic resources need to be mined and extracted from rocks in order to be obtained. There are only so many rocks in the world, thus, technically it is classed as a non-renewable source of energy. Although this may sound like a very good idea it can also be very dangerous and expensive to maintain! This is because we are dealing with nuclear matter which is expensive to extract and it produces toxic fumes and large masses of radiation which can cause health problems and diseases in humans such as Cancer!

Tilbury Power Station The Tilbury power stations are two fossil fuel power stations on the north bank of the River Thames at Tilbury in Essex. Tilbury Power Station has operated since 1967 and fires coal, as well as co-firing oil and biomass. The current system generates enough electricity to meet the electrical requirements of 1.4 million people, equivalent to 80% of the population of Essex
