2 “You are all a lost generation.” - Gertrude Stein in conversation Hemingway was born in Oak Park, Illinois in 1899.

3 Kansas City Star Began writing for the Kansas City Star in 1917. Throughout his lifetime, Hemingway referred to the Star’s style Guide: Use short sentences. Use short first paragraphs. Use vigorous English. Be positive, not negative." Hemingway’s journalist background is famously attributed to his terse style of writing.

4 World War I Volunteered to drive Ambulances in WWI. After being seriously injured, carried an Italian soldier to safety. Was rewarded the Italian Silver Medal of Bravery. While recuperating in Milan hospital, fell in love with Agnes von Kurowsky, a Red Cross nurse attending to his injuries. Hemingway biographer Jeffrey Meyers asserts that Kurowsky’s rejection led to Hemingway’s future relationship failures.

6 The Sun Also Rises Published in 1926, The Sun Also Rises was Hemingway’s first major novel. Focuses on the life of expatriate Americans and British following WWI. Novel begins in Paris and follows characters to Spain for the running of the bulls and bullfighting in Pamplona.
